Search for hidden treasures

Archaeologists are looking for hidden remains left by the people of past times. To discover them, they have to look very closely and recognise particularities in the landscape. Sometimes they look at their surroundings from the air or use special devices such as metal detectors.

There’s not always digging

If the archaeologists wind up with indications that there might be something special in the ground at a certain spot, they sometimes carry out excavations. However, not everything is dug up, because the objects are usually well protected from wind, weather and other influences in the ground. Only when archaeologists know that they can take the finds to a research laboratory or a museum do they take them out of the ground.

Architectural treasure in the ground

This long, flat elevation, which actually looks quite inconspicuous, also aroused the interest of the archaeologists. And lo and behold: they discovered a prehistoric fort that surrounded the four large rocks 2,300 years ago. The fort consisted of a wall made of wood, stones and earth as well as a palisade made of wood. Over the millennia, it deteriorated more and more until only what we can see here today remained.

Reconstruction of the rampart wall

A little below the Feldstein, a small part of the wall was excavated and rebuilt. To get there, please follow the loop trail. However, this is the only place where the remains of the fort can be seen open and unprotected. That way they will stay with us for a long time.

Take a look!

Can you recognise the remains of the wall?
