A home for two particular birds
The mighty Bruchhauser Steine provide a habitat for many plants and animals. This also includes two flying hunters: the peregrine falcon and the eagle owl which also breed here. On the Bornstein, the highest of the four rocks, the peregrine falcon prefers to breed. The eagle owl, on the other hand, changes its breeding site between Bornstein and Ravenstein. For 21 years, the peregrine falcon did not settle here to breed. The eagle owl had even disappeared for 100 years.Return after many years
Since 1990, the two hunters have been coming here again regularly to raise their offspring. This was achieved through the zealous cooperation of the owner of the Bruchhauser Steine, authorities and voluntary nature conservationists. Among other things, climbing was banned.Meals for hunters
Peregrine falcons feed almost exclusively on other birds which they hunt in the open air. This also includes carrier pigeons, as an archaeological find proves: in spring 2020, seven homing pigeon rings were discovered at the foot of the Bornstein. The eagle owl’s diet also includes other birds, but also mammals such as hares and rabbits or amphibians.Peregrine falcon
