Forest recreation area
Many people like to use the forest to go hiking, for “forest bathing” or for a little breather without the stress of everyday life.
Nature’s pantry
A forest, however, is capable of much more than just serving as a recreational area: it is also a pantry! Our ancestors knew this very well – we, on the other hand, have mostly forgotten what nature gives us on our doorstep thanks to overflowing supermarket shelves. Across the calendar, the forest offers many, many possibilities, for instance wild garlic and wood sorrel in spring, elder and mushrooms in autumn. Not to forget the hunted game which can provide a feast. There are also many nutritious things to eat over the winter: for example, rose hips and woodruff, with a little luck. And our ancestors also knew how to harvest and process mosses and roots.
Respect nature conservation!
All that said, please refrain from picking, collecting and harvesting here at the Bruchhauser Steine, as this is a nature reserve!
Look underneath!
Our flaps tell you what a great pantry the forest is.
Elder
You can make great things from elderberries: juice, syrup or spread.
You must not eat the berries raw, however, as they are poisonous in that state.
Wild garlic
Wild garlic tastes similar to garlic. But be careful! It has poisonous look-alikes, e.g. the lily of the valley.
Dandelion
You surely know dandelions! But did you know that you can make a delicious salad from the leaves?
Spruce
Ever nibbled on a tree? You can make a delicious syrup from the fresh shoots of the spruce.
Nettle
Ouch! Ever come too close to a stinging nettle? That can really hurt. However, if you wash them well, you can make a delicious salad or a pesto for pasta.
Rose hip
Here comes the healthy stuff! Rose hips are true vitamin bombs. By the way, they are the fruits of a certain rose.
Woodruff
Woodruff is not only available as sherbet. It is actually an herb. It can be used to make ice cream or syrup
Porcini mushroom
Collect delicious things: many porcini mushrooms grow in autumn. Delicious! But be careful: the porcini mushroom has poisonous look-alikes. Therefore, only real mushroom experts should collect mushrooms.
