No rarity
Wild boars are widespread in Germany and are also known under the generic term “wild swine”. Male wild boars are called boars, the females are called sows. Young wild boars are called squeakers.Way of life
Wild boars are omnivores. Their diet includes herbs, fruits and seeds as well as worms, insects, mice, eggs, young animals and even carrion. Wild boars can cause great damage to cultivated fields as they literally “plough” the soil. In technical language, this is called “disturbing” the soil.Offspring in the springtime
The mating season of wild boars extends over the months of November and December. This period is also called “rut”. After four months, the moment arrives: the sow gives birth to the offspring which usually consists of several squeakers. As long as the young pigs live with their mother, you should not get too close to the wild boar family: the sow will defend her young very aggressively! The boar, on the other hand, does not care for the young animals: he is a loner. CaptionDue to their excellent sense of smell, wild boars are used to search for truffles and even drugs.
In Central Europe, boars can grow to weigh up to 200 kg. In the far reaches of Asia, they even weigh in at over 300 kg.
Wild boars spread swine fever which also threatens our domestic pigs. This is another reason why they are hunted.
